Electron Cloud Effects at Positron/Electron (e+/e-) Machines and Electron Cloud Diagnostics

چکیده
Background electrons are ubiquitous in high-intensity particle accelerators. Under certain operating conditions, amplification of the electron cloud can occur. The beam-cloud interaction can seriously degrade the accelerator performance with effects that range from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities. Although electron cloud effects (ECEs) were first observed 20 years ago in a proton ring, in recent years, they have been widely observed and intensely studied in e+/erings. This paper will focus on describing electron cloud diagnostics, which have led to an enhanced understanding of ECEs, especially details of beam-induced multipacting and saturation of the cloud. Such experimental results can be used to provide realistic limits on key input parameters for modeling efforts.

Properties of the electron cloud in a high-energy positron and electron storage ring

Under certain conditions, interactions between this electron cloud and the high-energy beam can give rise to numerous effects that can seriously degrade the accelerator performance. These effects range from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities and emittance blowup. Although electron-clo...

Clouds of low energy electrons frequently build up within the beam chambers of particle accelerators. In many cases, electron cloud effects (ECEs) cause beam instabilities and degradation of performance. This is of particular concern for high intensity positron rings, in which ECEs can lead to emittance blow-up. Understanding and mitigating electron cloud build up is thus of particular importan...

This report is a brief summary of the session D of the workshop ECLOUD04 about electron cloud build up simulations (Part I). In this session the status of some of the existing codes for the build up simulations has been reported and updates on the progress towards new powerful 3D and self-consistent codes have been presented. Simulations specifically applied to damping rings for linear collider...

The modification of microwave signals passing through an electron cloud can be used as a diagnostic tool for detecting its presence and as a measure for its effective density. This observation method was demonstrated in pioneering measurements at the CERN SPS in 2003 with protons and at PEP-II in 2006 with positron beams in the particle accelerator field. Results and applications of this techni...
متن کاملWake-field and fast head-tail instability caused by an electron cloud.
In positron and proton storage rings, electrons produced by photoemission, ionization, and secondary emission accumulate in the vacuum chamber during multibunch operation with close spacing. A positron or proton bunch passing through this "electron cloud" experiences a force similar to a short-range wake field. This effective wake field can cause a transverse-mode-coupling instability, if the e...
